ART EDUCATION

Goals and Objectives for Art K-12

We want to provide you with the attitudes, concepts, and skills necessary for both making and teaching art. We emphasize studio disciplines like painting and ceramics, while integrating the history, aesthetics, and criticism of art of the past and present.
The Greensboro College Art with Licensure program uses objectives specific to the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction Guidelines for the preparation of Visual Art Teachers.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Our program thoroughly prepares you for a variety of teaching methods and learning styles, with laboratory and clinical experiences at all learning levels and early field experiences at elementary and secondary levels prior to and including student teaching.

Degrees and Requirements

Students majoring in art who wish to be licensed as teachers of art (K-12) may elect either the B.A. or B.S. Degree.
Students pursuing K-12 licensure are required to complete the following courses in their major: ART 102, 104, 140, 200, 204, 248, 260, 261, 330, 363, 363.1, 471, 474, and six hours of art electives.
Professional course requirements are as follows: *ART 306, *ART 306.1, PSY 233, *PSY 315, SPED 211 or SPED 353 or *SPED 367, SPED 211.1, PE 223, EDU 200, EDU 200.1, EDU 200.3, *EDU 317, EDU 325, EDU 375, *EDU 400, either *EDU 492A/*EDU 492B or *EDU 494, and *EDU 494.3.
*Requires admission to Teacher Education
The following courses, which may be taken as part of the general education requirements, also are recommended: POL 201 or 202; THE 108; MUS 111; ENCS 210, 211, or 212.
Students seeking teacher licensure must obtain at least a grade of C in each and all professional education and specialty area courses. No pass/fail grades will be accepted. Students are required to complete all professional/specialty courses prior to student teaching.

Copies are also on reserve in the library. Students desiring SDPI licensure should be aware that graduation with licensure will require more than the minimum 124 semester hours.

Courses:

Art and Children - ART 306

This course assists the prospective art teacher in acquiring strategies, techniques, methods, and attitudes for teaching art K-12. This study includes an examination of the nature of the K-12 student as well as the implications for teaching. Also addressed are curriculum, assessment, community involvement, and special populations issues. The student will receive an overview of the principles of visual art, including aesthetic qualities, structural forms, and the past and present historical role of art in society. Open to enrollment from elementary education and special education majors. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Offered every Spring Semester.

Art and Children Fieldwork Component - ART 306.1

Required for all students seeking art teaching licensure. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education. Offered every Spring Semester.

Modern Art History - ART 363

This course covers the major artists and art movements from 1860 to the present. Offered in alternate years. Satisfies Fine Arts General Education requirement; theoretical-lecture credit. Offered Fall Semesters, 2003 and 2005.

Modern Art History Fieldwork Component - ART 363.1

Required for all students seeking teacher licensure in art. For course description, see ART 306.1. Offered Fall Semesters, 2003 and 2005.
