Will Flanagan, "Drawing of Kat"

Emphasis is on a traditional European figurative approach. Students learn the basics for accurate proportion, rendering of light and shadow, and composition. Knowledge of anatomy and media, increasingly including non-traditional and electronic resources, is crucial.

Students also research and absorb lessons from intensive study of master draftsmen and women. Presentations of their research are important for cultivating awareness of both technical and expressive possibilities, as well practicing professional behaviors for surviving the art world.

They are encouraged to present their drawings for exhibition and evaluate each other's work with a critical vocabulary.

Self-directed investigation augments regular class periods spent in the studio, especially for advanced students.
